POLITICO Morning Energy | The coalition is calling for lawmakers to pass legislation in the next Congress creating a federal standard that would decarbonize the transportation sector by setting a schedule for gradually reducing the carbon intensity of transportation fuel sources. Fuels would compete through an annual average carbon score and fuel sources with a carbon score lower than the baseline would generate credits. Fuel providers can obtain credits by blending renewable fuels, purchasing them from other sources or enhancing their
efficiency using renewable energy.

Several states have already enacted similar policies and the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee discussed the merits of those policies earlier this year, but no specific legislation has yet been introduced.
